Angel Island by bike (almost)

I have wanted to take our bikes to Angel Island in San Francisco Bay and ride around it for a very long time. The idea seemed perfect- small island, relatively flat, no cars. Ideal cycling for the 3 of us, with Alexander on his own bike with training wheels.

It wasn't raining today, so today, seemed to be the day! However, when we landed we found that there was only one marked bike trail that was more mountain bike than road bike. We looked around and found that every other route out of the harbour was marked "No Bikes!"

Here we are in the picture somewhat dejected.

Later Dena asked a ranger what the deal was with only one steep, rough climb out of the bay. "Oh you can push your bikes up that road there, and you would come the main road around the island."

Foolishly perhaps, we had interpreted the sign to mean No Bikes (which is what it said) and not No Cycling! By then it was too late and we took the last boat home. :-(
