Into the Forest

Alexander is off school this week so I am taking 3 days off too...

Today, we put the bikes on the car and took them down to Nisene Marks State Park http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=666 near Aptos. We had lunch at the Britannia Arms where Dena noted the fake pub food was actually worse than the real stuff back in the UK.

We rode deep into the forest and found a quiet spot where the creek turned 90 degrees beneath a cliff top. Upon examination of the rocks we were amazed to find fossilized sea shells. We were at least 5 miles inland so this was quite puzzling. As the afternoon drew to close we headed back to Santa Cruz and Dena found a book on the park which noted that about 5 million years ago the creek side where we had been standing had been the ocean floor. Wow!
