Alexander fails the inkblot test
As a child I used to take pleasure in finding familiar shapes and figures in random patterns such as you would find on a linoleum floor or a patterned bedspread. My imagination would run wild finding ships, planes, trees and people lurking in the linoleum or flickering in a fireplace. As an adult I now regard such an exercise as an excellent way for a child to exercise their imagination.
So sitting on the bed one morning with Alexander I pointed out the shape of a ship in our patterned quilt.
"Hmmm... yes I see." he said somewhat doubtfully.
I pressed on hopeful he would catch on. "And look that shape is like a Greek hat."
"Oh, yes and look Daddy, that shape is like a willie. And there's another one and that one looks like a really big willie and..."
"Never mind son."
