St. Paul

As part of my transition to the new role I thought it only right to honor some of the commitments I had made prior to taking it. Two weeks ago that took me to Boston and this week it has taken to me one of the twin cities- St. Paul. Working while your former co-workers dynamically disappear from your corporate email address book is de-motivating even when you expected it (and there were several I didn’t expect.) Sigh.

I hadn’t realized quite how far North St. Paul is. It is a bit to the left of one of the great lakes and absolutely freezing this time of year. Still at least the sun shone and I had about 2x1hour breaks to wander about. I made it down to the river and up to the cathedral. The city has some really spectacular architecture, but sadly no real charisma.

One thing you can say about the “Twin Cities” is that it has weather- lots of weather. To stop people suffering from the effects of weather, the clever townsfolk of St. Paul have created the Skyway; a mesh of glass bridges that interconnect the city street blocks of St. Paul. This means you can walk all over St. Paul looking at the weather without actually experiencing it. However in reality there is nowhere to go as there are almost no shops in the downtown at all. You couldn’t buy a can of beans or a AA battery within 3 miles of here. All there is left of downtown St. Paul are office buildings, museums, a hospital and some religious buildings. After 15 minutes walking around Macy’s the only store I could find, I spent the evening watching YouTube and ordering room service. There was simply no where to go.
